How to Get A Health Summary

Writer's picture: Myra AMyra A

At Healing Leaves Clinic, we know that getting a health summary might seem confusing if you've never done it before. Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step. No need to stress! Just follow these instructions, and you’ll have your health summary ready in no time.

What is a Health Summary, and Why Do You Need It?

Think of a health summary as a snapshot of your medical history. It tells doctors what’s going on with your health—your current conditions, medications, allergies, and more. It’s super important because it helps us give you the best care possible.

Don’t worry, this isn’t some huge, complicated document. Your GP (general practitioner) can get it done quickly—if you follow these steps.

Option 1: Get Your Health Summary from Your GP (Easy Option)

Let’s start with the easiest method. If you have a regular GP (family doctor), they can provide your health summary.

Here’s exactly what to do:

  1. Book an appointment with your GP.

    • If you don’t know how, call your GP’s clinic and say, “Hi, I’d like to book an appointment to get a health summary.”

    • If you're using an online booking system, look for "General Consultation."

  2. Go to the appointment.

    • Tell your doctor, "I need a health summary for my records."

    • If they ask why, you can say it's for a clinic or just for your own records—whatever you prefer.

  3. Get your health summary.

    • Ask for a printed copy if you like physical paperwork.

    • Ask for an email copy if you want it digital (most clinics are happy to email it to you).

Pro tip: If you already have an appointment with your GP scheduled, just ask for your health summary at the end of that visit. Easy.

Option 2: Access Your Health Summary Online via My Health Record

This option is great if you already use MyGov for government services (e.g., Medicare). Your health summary might already be saved in My Health Record.

Here’s how to find it:

  1. Go to my.gov.au and log in.

    • Use your MyGov username and password.

  2. Find the 'My Health Record' section.

    • If you don’t see it, you might need to link your account. Follow the instructions to link it to Medicare.

  3. Download your health summary.

    • Once you're in, look for the Health Summary section. Download or print it for easy access.

If you’re stuck, call Medicare or ask a family member or friend to help.

What to Do After You Get Your Health Summary

Now that you have your health summary, you can:

  • Have it ready for your appointment with Healing Leaves Clinic.

  • Email it to us (once requested).

  • Keep it for your records.

This document helps us understand your health history, so we can provide better care and tailor recommendations specifically for you.
